Senior Administrator - Unix
Job Description: 

Position Summary

The Senior Administrator Unix is responsible for administering, maintaining, and optimizing the organization’s Unix/Linux servers and related IT infrastructure. The role ensures system stability, security, performance, and high availability across the enterprise.

Responsibility Description

Infrastructure Management

  • Administer, configure, and maintain Unix/Linux servers, VMware virtual environments, storage solutions, and web/application servers.
  • Monitor and optimize server performance, availability, and capacity. 
  • Implement, maintain, monitor backups, redundancy, and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Automate routine tasks and generate system monitoring reports/logs.
  • Support IT infrastructure projects including server deployments, migrations, and upgrades. 
  • Conduct testing, deployment, and go-live support for Unix/Linux projects 

Continuous Improvement

  • Research emerging technologies and propose solutions to improve infrastructure efficiency.
  • Evaluate new tools, products, and technologies for potential deployment. 
  • Conduct performance analysis and optimize system configurations accordingly. 
  • Conducts problem review sessions with his/her team for significant issues and applies lessons learned to subsequent recurrences 

System Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with software licensing, maintenance agreements, and organizational security policies. 
  • Ensures that the user community understands and adheres to necessary procedures to maintain security, compliance and access policies

Policies and Procedures

  • Develop, maintain and promote standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Unix/Linus administration, monitoring, backups, and security.
  • Recommends policies for system usage, access control, and maintenance standards. 
  • Define protection mechanisms and ensure the appropriate administration of system infrastructure. Responsible for the implementation of effective security measures and the existence of disaster recovery mechanisms for these systems, according to the information security policy and the relevant procedures 
  • Ensure that the information security framework and all relevant procedures, standards and practices are followed by their subordinates 

Liaison with other Business Units

  • Collaborate with internal clients (project and development teams) to plan, negotiate and interpret information on projects.
  • Provide regular status updates and repots to senior management 

Vendor and Third-Party Service Providers

  • Connects with vendors for resolution of any IT infrastructure related issues.
  • Ensures obtaining of optimum service levels for the organization. 
  • Works with vendors to ensure optimum IT infrastructure solutions & produce an exact Bill of Quantity (BoQ) necessary for different projects

Self-Development

  • Strives to achieve the highest levels of proficiency in all the competencies and skills required to perform the role.
  • Identifies the training and development requirements for self and agrees on them with manager to ensure that the required trainings are arranged and attended. 
  • Sets the performance goals in the beginning of the year after discussion with the manager and ensures that the goals are achieved during the course of the year 

Guiding Junior Team Members

  • Provides technical expertise to new and/or junior members in the team to guide them on a day-to-day basis and help them scale up faster.

MIS and Reports

  •  Prepares timely and accurate MIS statements and reports to meet organization’s requirements, policies and standards 

Quality Management and Continuous Improvement

  • Ensures compliance to all relevant quality management procedures and controls to guarantee compliance and delivery of high-quality service.
  • Stimulates and contributes to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement of systems, processes and practices taking into account best practices, improvement of business processes, cost reduction and productivity improvement 

Academic/ Vocational Qualifications

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in computer sciences / IT / Engineering or a Diploma in Engineering

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience in a similar environment for a bachelor’s candidate and 7-10 years for an Engineering Diploma holder
